Veranstaltungsbeschreibung: Can we listen to a past that was not recorded? To one that existed before the development of sound reproduction technology, for instance? And what tools would be needed? Is sound too buried under layers of time? Can we dig for it? By asking what it means to listen to the past this course will draw awareness both to sound as a social event – music, theatre, and dance as forms of corporeal relations – and to its absence which remains. The attention to absence will help us A. disrupt the focus on visual and material evidence that has, at least since the advent of archaeology in the nineteenth century, structurally conditioned the ways in which the past has come to be known, and B. repurpose the technological and theoretical tools and concepts that we might work with to listen for the simultaneity of the past in the present. By tuning in to the static of the past we will reckon with the noise of the present and ultimately invert our agenda so as to try and listen to the dramatic changes in our own acousmatic landscapes. Can we hear that which has become unavailable to us, namely the historical transformation of our senses in modernity? Working language: English Max. 14 participants Open to FK, Bachelor and Master of ID and DM Fridays, 2 – 4 PM per MS Teams + other appointments First session: 6 November 2020, 2 – 4 PM, Introduction Format: This course will comprise weekly lectures, reading and listening based discussions, presentation by participants, one-on-one sessions, and practical exercises and group assignments, possibly leading to a collaboration with Radio Angrezi.
