Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
„The body is a physical text in society.”
Akeia Benard

Situated knowledge and situated ignorance (in health care), entanglements of colonialism, power and body politics, the making and pathologizing of (trans*) bodies are topics deeply connected to how we call things, how we talk about – the body.

What we say about something depends on how and with which means we say it.
“This is the oppressor’s languages yet I need it to talk to you”, Adrienne Rich sais and points directly to the conflict we will encounter when verbalizing bodies.
Language will be needed, in order to have discussions on discourse, on naming bodies and on the bodies knowledge productions. But what happens when the body and its practices withdraw from language into workout, dance, performativity, sickness? Are these practices then doomed to stay out of discourse? Could there be other forms of negotiation?

All of the topics and questions above will be part of this course.
Textual work in the course will include reading text by yourself, in and to class, phrasing questions towards the texts, critizing and commenting on the texts as well as discussing them. Towards the end of the semester, each student will work on a speech concerning the topics of the course.
Texts will be, among others, by Kathy Acker, Akeia Benard, Michel Foucault, Jack Halberstam, bell hooks and Paul B. Preciado.
Presentational work will include presenting an artist and their work, analyzing, discussing and connecting their work to the topic of the course and giving the speech one worked on.
Artists to discuss will be, among others, Shu Lea Cheang, Anna Daucíková, Vaginal Davis, Adrienne Rich, Wu Tsang and Mierle Laderman Ukeles.

Keywords of the course could be queerfeminism, black feminism, gender, trans*, body politics, knowledge production, pharmapornographic era, language as powertool, questioning, uncertainty.
