Art plus/slash/and/or Design
- Practical Reflections on Media Arts, Digital Design and Beyond

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
In the past the fields of Digital Design and Media Arts, specifically during the wide-spread emergence of digital technologies in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s, have been closely linked. As media technologies have matured and permeated all aspects of life since then, what was once a niche community of creative practitioners has developed into a large field of various strands and genres of art and design, that do not necessarily touch on each other or exchange ideas anymore.

It seems like an interesting and fruitful undertaking to explore the full spectrum of digital creative practice, from the aesthetic and conceptual use of digital media in contemporary art to applied digital design projects, and most importantly, all the blurry areas in-between. In the face of largely diverse approaches to digital media across art and design practices, let's try to position ourselves and answer this question together: Are we artists or designers? Are these labels useful to us? And what does it mean to work in-between these disciplines?

We will do this in hands-on workshops, exercises, readings, group discussions and individual critiques, that each student will use as the basis for an independently developed art plus/slash/and/or design project.

//

The course is scheduled as a block seminar. After an organisational meeting at the beginning of the semester we will get together for a kick-off workshop one Saturday in November and continue discussions in individual critiques online to prepare for the one-week seminar that will be scheduled during the semester break (late March / early April).
