THINKING THROUGH LANDSCAPES

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Once one starts noticing and observing one realises one's surroundings are always part of the frame one chooses to look through. Sometimes this choice is conscious and other times it is unconscious. How we think and create can be navigated through, as if we are observing or walking through a landscape. Once your perspective changes, so does the landscape you see.

"... the landscape does not have to make acquaintance. You may have to make acquaintance with it, but it does not with you, it is there" Stein, Getrude. Lectures in America. (1935)

Departing from Gertrude Steins "landscape plays", we start to think of our experience closer to that of a surrounding landscape than a linear narrative. Instead of a dramatic dialogue between two subjects, we might think of the dialogues, connections and entanglements of the scenery and the more associative and complex ways these entanglements perform and create meaning.
The landscape here is taken as a starting point for rethinking our organisation of thoughts and creative processes.

The course will work with different short excerpts of texts and artistic references related to the suggested topic from performing landscapes to spectators' attention, participation and navigation through a landscape. What is the role of humans and non humans in a landscape? Are they spectators, entangled participants or traces they left behind?
We will create landscapes and think about how they perform. In this decentralised point of view, where there is not one central focus in space, we can find many different shapes and voices, mountains and lakes, peaks and valleys that can construct a narrative of their own.
Students will think of their projects and realise them by the end of the course in a form of an exhibition. This can take shape in various formats which we will think through and discuss over the course of our sessions.
