Children’s books and Pasolini

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
This semester in Illustration will offer a relatively straightforward and quite typical illustration assignment, namely illustrating and producing a children’s book.

Contrary to previous semesters, there will be no complex theoretical frameworks to enforce before the creative exercises start and the focus is entirely on your development as illustrators.

The only atypical element may be the introduction of the Italian film director and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini, as an accompanying theme. This can seem arbitrary and may cast suspicion that it would be because your teacher is an admirer of his work (which is coincidentally the case) but it actually has a relevant didactic function in this context.

A usual misunderstanding concerning children’s books is that they would to be cute, sweet, innocent, clarified and harmless. In reality many of the most successful works for children deal with quite heavy topics, which most children also can relate to and recognise themselves in. To be a child, being confronted with the brutality of the grown up world, social akwardness and and the general brutality of our civilization, is far from a rosy garden. In that sense books like Harry Potter, The Brothers Lionheart, or many of the Grimm fairy tales, is something that many can relate to much more than to, for example, Miffy the rabbit. Even those of us who may wish that the world was more like the Teletubbies or Benoît Brisefere.

Our motto for the semester is: It can be nice, but not completely nice.

As preparation before the course you are asked to watch any film(s) by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the unchallenged Maestro of unveiled pain (and passion), and pick a theme, narrative, leitmotif, character or anything that may serve as inspiration for you, from his entire cinematic or poetic oeuvre. The first day of the course you will make a short presentation of the theme that you have found, which will included in your children’s book. You will also have to bring the text you book will be based on. The text can either be written by yourself, someone else or an existing text. In either case, the main focus will be on your illustrations and their relation to the story.

Another precondition atypical for our times, but not so much for illustration at the HfK, is that your book needs to be entirely handmade. This concerns all stages of its production, the sketches, the illustrations, the typography, the layout, the printing and the making of the book item itself – all of it need to be created without electronic devices.

The use of computers, iPads, phones, e-books etc. will be prohibited during class :(
