Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Welcome to the Computational Universe (Hayles): Following the idea that "technology is neither good nor bad, nor is it neutral" (Kranzberg), we will take a close look at digital media technology and examine its sociopolitical conditions.

Recently, critics have called for more diversity regarding the "Brogrammer's" scene and have claimed that only the involvement a wider range of individuals into the professional field of computer science will put an end to biased algorithms, sexist "smart" technology and racist facial recognition. Beyond this (very legitimate) critique, Critical Code Studies however proclaim that in order to understand the power relations at work in digital media landscapes, it is inevitable to examine the structures themselves at least as much as the individuals producing them. As Wendy Chun puts it: "The code, rather than the programmer, rules".

The starting point of this class is the finding that computer technology (like all technologies) is never merely a technical solution to a posed problem, but always an assemblage of social, political, cultural and technical aspects. Together, we will dive into the historical, social and political conditions that have put forth digital media technologies which have become ubiquitous by now. Looking at different components of the digital — like networks, codes, soft-, hard- and wetware, algorithms, machines and the internet — we will examine the political implications baked into the infrastructure, in search of the ideologies obfuscated by the cloud.

Please note that this is a theory class, so you will be expected to read approximately one text a week. In class, we will mostly discuss texts and concepts, occasionally there will be additional practical exercises, short excursions or movies.

Main language will be English.

! Ausdrückliche Einladung auch an alle, die sich im Englischen nicht komplett sicher fühlen: Wir werden Wege finden, uns zweisprachig zu verständigen.
