Veranstaltungsname:
“Art through the prism of Life”: ontology, art and existence
in Nietzsche’s early philosophy

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Few figures in the history of Western philosophical thought have exerted such a magnetism and rovoked so potent reactions -often of opposing natures- within, but also outside the academic world as the figure of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). If we had to list the thinkers who have most powerfully influenced and determined the development not only of the thought, but also of the culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, the author of Thus Spake Zarathustra would undoubtedly occupy one of the first places on the list. First from literature, art and psychology, then also from philosophy, politics and even mysticism, but also from pop culture, the recognition of Nietzsche as a decisive reference of Western culture has been unanimous; indifference towards his figure is something that the Western world has simply not been able to afford.

In this seminar we will read, analyse and discuss interpretatively and critically Nietzsche's early production (1870-1872), the most important crystallisation of which is found in The Birth of Tragedy, the first major work in the Nietzschean corpus. We will not do this from a purely erudite motivation, as if to acquire new theories and information to fatten our "culture" and erudition, but as subjects existentially concerned by the great themes developed by the philosopher in this period: art, nature, human existence and, in sum, the ontology that encompasses, in a unitary vision, all these fundamental themes. The idea is to be able to put us on the way to rethink by our own effort these questions by the hand of an essential thinker for any contemporary discussion bout them. Particularly, and as this course is mainly oriented to students of the University of the Arts Bremen, the question of art, and how to conceive art in a vision that does not take it abstractly, but as part of a joint vision of existence and the world, will occupy a fundamental place. As part of our journey, we will try to understand in depth some of the most important elements of Nietzsche's thought, such as the concepts of the Apollonian and the Dionysian, the idea of the fundamental unity of all things and of the world as a manifestation of this one originary reality, the interpretations of the history of the West based on the concepts of tragic wisdom and ethical Socratism, and so on. The syllabus with a detailed list of the chosen texts will be provided in the first session.
