collective possibilities - block seminar with Haig Aivazian

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
For the last 5 or so years, my activities as a cultural practitioner experiment with modes of address and making that might inhabit, on one hand, the welling of an unprecedented revolutionary horizon in Lebanon since 2019 and, on the other, the near total collapse of the economic and social orders, along with the various depressions, depletions and deflations that collapse continues to engender.

I have been approaching much of my work with minimal distinctions between thinking and making, and as an engine to collaborate, make and think with others. With this method, I seek collective spaces of praxis in order to keep doing what I do with a semblance of meaning, and to continue to inhabit spaces and times of duress, without succumbing to a logic that reduces our struggles to metrics of victory or defeat.

I would like to propose a series of prompts, readings, exercises as ways to search and develop together, a series of adequate registers, practices, and methodologies, to contend with the state of the world today, in a manner that is neither defeatist, nor overly celebratory.

As a starting point for clarifying some of the questions we will tackle together, I will start from what I think I am in the process of knowing, which is to say my own practice, with a thematic concern with the transformative nature of 4 main technologies: artificial light, artificial darkness, computation, and law.

From these questions, we will reflect more broadly about various models of power and how we might contend with them through our respective lines of questioning and practices.
