Veranstaltungsname:
A Feminist reading group: writing place and publishing space. — Understanding autotheory as a feminist practice

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:

Theory itself is often assumed to be abstract: something is more theoretical the more abstract it is, the more it is abstracted from everyday life. To abstract is to drag away, detach, pull away, or divert. We might then have to drag theory back, to bring theory back to life.
—Sara Ahmed, Living a Feminist Life

In this class, we will come together as a reading group. Throughout the semester we will explore the concrete bodily experience of space within feminist text production. Through the lens of locality and spatiality, we will explore the politics of location within feminist writings and publishing strategies.
As a reading group, we will ask questions such as:
What are the personal, physical, local, and spatial aspects of writing, and how to publish them? How can we, as artists and designers, utilize words and texts as material for our creative practices, and conversely — how can we use our practices as material for our writing? How can feminist theory and writing practices help us establish different relationships with landscapes, places, environments, and their inhabitants? What can we learn from feminist writing and publishing practices to create spaces of relationships, care, and vulnerability?
Here, text production means both the work with words and their modes of inhabiting place, time, and bodies. Here, publishing strategies mean the moment when those words become active agents weaving together ecologies of writers, readers, audience, and environment.

We will focus on texts within the realm of autotheory. A way of doing theory that exceeds existing genre categories by integrating the self into the theoretical field. Situated at the intersection of art, literature, activism, and academia autotheory interweaves theoretical elements with concrete personal experience.
Throughout the semester we will bring writing, reading, and publishing exercises into dialogue with theoretical discussions while engaging with poetry and prose. We will experiment with voice, word, text, and image to drag theory into everyday life.
