Veranstaltungsname:
Illustration General – Human General

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Karl Nawrot and Te I Um, who are teaching in substitution for Prof. Samuel Nyholm in SS 2024, will provide a frame that encompasses illustration as a whole by integrating Open Topic and Gestalterische Praxis; so called Illustration General. Within the framework of Illustration General, course participants will experience a variety of illustration-related exercises and practices through the two teachers‘s independent programs. Because the Open Topic and Gestalterische Praxis will be linked, priority is given to participants who sign up for both courses, which is highly recommended.

We, Karl and Te I will conduct different topics at our own discretion, depending on our course schedules. We will provide various topics in the class as listed below. Course participants can choose whether they follow the provided course plans, or if they have a personal topic they strongly desire, they can develop it and work on it in the course. We will supervise their individual projects.

Workshop 1 (by Karl): Pluto II (after N.U. after O.T.)

This Workshop is linked to the Open Topic 'Illustration General' for the second week.
For this series of courses,* which I'm coming to run in two large sessions, I'd like us to work on a remake of an Astro Boy story created by Osamu Tezuka entitled 'The Greatest Robot On Earth' (March 1964).** Each participant will have to deal with a part of this story in the way they wish.*** The result of this experiment will be produced in several 65 × 50 cm formats (between 4 and 8 for each participant), which when placed in the context of an exhibition will give rise to a giant comic book.

Note
* 21 May - 31 May / 26 June - 5 July
** This story has been reinterpreted by the mangaka Naoki Urasawa (Monster and 20th Century Boys) under the title Pluto, recently adapted by a famous streaming platform into 8 episodes.
*** Each participant will be able to choose how he or she wants to interpret the part. For example, he or she could treat it in a totally typographic or abstract way, or simply be interested in the decorum of the story, or even from a purely material point of view (these are just examples).

Workshop 2(by Te I): Soul food recipe

A recipe must contain the correct number of ingredients (contents), and exact information so that the reader can achieve the same results by following the instructions. It looks very easy to produce, but it is the result of many times of research, trials, and the writer's love for the recipe. Pictures on the recipe help the reader understand how to succeed in making something and have their own value to correspond with the text. This workshop will provide an opportunity for intensive training in the processing of information to make it as easily accessible as possible.

Course participants are required to create illustrative recipes (instructions) for what they consider soul food, nourishing forms in our lives. The workshop is open to anyone who interprets food as anything that sustains our lives and growth. It will not only focus on exploring personal interests but will also emphasize practical training in the correlation between text and illustration to disseminate information.

Schedule: 6th, 7th, 14th, 20th, 21th of June

*The exact time for the Course will be informed before the course.
*Digital devices are not permitted during the course; however, participants will have the opportunity to use PCs in the classroom. For Te I's workshop, this allows them to partially work with digital devices, specifically for the digitalization and editing of their analog illustrations.
