Heidegger on technology and the technological world

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) is undoubtedly one of those unavoidable but controversial figures, who divides the public and places us in the difficult situation of not knowing how to position ourselves or what to do about it. On the one hand, there is broad consensus that he is one of the most important and influential philosophers of the 20th century —for many, the most important and, perhaps, the last of the great "titans" of Western philosophy; on the other hand, his name has been obscured by the relationship we know he maintained with the German National Socialist Party, as well as by the question of to what extent his philosophy is determined by the ideology of the Third Reich.

This seminar is part of a broader initiative aimed at conducting a critical examination of Heidegger's conception of art and technology. This time, we will focus on the Heideggerian conception of Technik, that is to say not only, nor in the first place, the technological artefacts themselves; but, foremost, the technological world, and the situation of the human existence (Dasein) within it —to which the rise of the technological artefacts belongs. To this end, we will introduce ourselves into the subject by first reading the more accesible discourse Gelassenheit (Releasement or Serenity). In it, among other things, Heidegger distinguishes the mode of thinking that prevails in the world of technicity from another, more essential one, which is, for the most part, missing; he also meditates about the modes of relation that we can cultivate towards the technological artefacts in a rather straightforward way. Then, we will focus on the famous and more challenging essay "The question concerning technology", trying to perform a critical and detailed reading of it, as far as possible line by line. We will, of course, try to gain an in-depth understanding of Heidegger's conception of the essence of technology as “enframing”, i.e., the peculiar way in which what is as a whole comes into the open and becomes intelligible in the technological world; moreover, we will also try to stimulate and strengthen our ability to think philosophically by our own account, since, for many, Heidegger's great merit lies not so much in the content of his ideas, but in the way in which the philosopher sets out a way of developing philosophical thinking. Finally, we will raise the question of whether it still makes sense to consider Heidegger’s conception of technology seriously in the light of the ethical controversies that have surrounded his figure and philosophy, but avoiding doing so from mere prejudice; instead, we will revisit his work to gain the insights needed to approach this question with the honesty and seriousness that it deserves. The syllabus with a detailed bibliography will be provided in the first session.
