Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
Related to their particular ideas, processes, and practices around the topic of space, participants are invited to develop their own (or collective) projects within the framework of the Temporary Spaces class.

About the Temporary Spaces Class:
With the aim to critically reflect space as a temporary category, Temporary Spaces class deals with historical, political, social, technological, and aesthetic aspects of spatial production. Beyond disciplinary conventions and boundaries, the class explores practices that include various media and experimentation with space, in different scales, from urban interventions to video, installations, performances, sound, and text. The works are research based spanning critical theory and ancient philosophy, feminist and queer theories, socialist architectural utopias etc. Ultimately, Temporary Spaces is a platform for the collaborative creation of reflexive aesthetic experiences.
In regular gatherings participants come together to discuss ideas, approaches, and work with other members of the class, faculty, and guests. A series of presentations, lectures and other inputs will be given during the semester to support individual and collective development.
Collective gatherings are in English.
The class continuously shares their work in the form of exhibitions, spatial (urban) interventions, and publications in and with the Weserburg Museum Bremen, Sinop Biennial, Top e.V. Berlin, Schwankhalle Bremen, Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, theater.prekariat Stuttgart, Theater Bremen, Wasserspeicher Berlin, Württembergischer Kunstverein, documenta fifteen etc.

***Interested students are asked to send an email by October 15, 2023 with their name, matriculation number, field of study, portfolio, and a brief statement as to why they are interested in the class.

Temporary Spaces Semester Topic:
PERA
Exhibition with field trip to Istanbul
The exhibition project on decolonial artistic and architectural research and practice takes place at the invitation of the Pera Museum in Istanbul and is linked to the field trip in the fall of 2023. The Pera Museum, with its archival collection, neoclassical architecture, and urban setting, provides a “contact zone” for us to engage in a decolonial, decentered history of aesthetic practices and transcultural exchange. Responding to this context, we will evolve a collective exhibition and spatial intervention at the renowned museum in 2024.

With its collection's focus on "Orientalism," the Pera Museum allows us to explore interdisciplinary artifacts that have both shaped and undermined notions of modern Europe and its "Other," of center and periphery, of cultural domination and submission. We look at the role that a shift in perspective from modernist/colonial "distinction" to "encounter" might play in the concrete context of Pera, as proposed by Mary Luise Pratt through her concept of contact zones.

Initiating a practice-based and projective research on the Museum and the past and present urban context of Pera in Istanbul, the collaborative project develops aesthetic and site-specific observations and formations, including reading, mapping, sketching, writing, modeling, photography and video. Through different critical lenses, the seminar will explore the entangled history and present of Westernized modernity.
