Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:

Physicality, it seemed, would loose all relevance
as it was subsumed by the connective fabric of the internet.
–Carlo Ratti and Matthew Claudel, 2016

Curfews, lockdowns, physical distancing, and the closing of restaurants, bars, museums, or playgrounds,
that force us to vacate public places and inhabit cyber spaces instead, will serve as a starting
point to explore the intersection between digital technologies and urban life. In this online seminar, we
will examine the city beyond its material foundation of bricks and stone and uncover invisible infrastructures
of the city as a space of flows. While we only have our computer screens to interact with
each other this semester, we will understand ourselves as cyborg citizens and deal with post-urban
fantasies and theorizations of cyber space, while tracing the enmeshments of virtual and physical
space in urban media, design, and architecture. Cities, bodies, physical flows and information -communication
technologies will be examined as hybrid complexes that cannot be seen as purely ‚virtual‘
on the one, or purely ‚real‘ on the other hand. We will examine the analogies and entanglements of bits
and atoms, code and clay, dirt and data, meatspace and cyberspace, form and information, to understand
the relationship between urban space and mobile, embedded, networked, and distributed media
and analyze how the interaction with and through technologies increasingly shape how we experience
and define the city.
