Visual Storytelling: Exploring the Art and Theory of Narrative Imagery

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
We have a remarkable ability to tell stories; stories of things that do not even exist. Through that, we don’t just imagine things individually, we turn it into a shared experience of worldbuilding – be it religious, political or societal – allowing us to collaborate and live by common ‘myths’. This individual or collective imagining doesn’t just come in words, but flourishingly manifests in imagery, too.

Since the inception of cognitive awareness, as cave paintings all over the world demonstrate, we have been creating pictures to tell stories. Today, we are inundated with images everywhere. Especially in times of swift global accessibility of imagery from different cultures at the palm of one’s hand, there is an increasing demand for visual literacy to read and understand what meaning and stories particular images contain. This present-day landscape of media distribution actively exposes unfamiliar stories from unfamiliar cultures, fostering our ability to relate to people, to whom we would otherwise have no connection. Visual storytelling is a vivid form of escapism as well as worldbuilding – an outlet for the urge to tell stories of one’s own imagination, fears, views, etc. – and irrespective of cultural dissimilarity, it can highlight our common ground.

Narratives reflect human lives and even help us comprehend aspects of the real world; any visual narrative can depict a reel of our lives. From static, sequential to moving images, we will explore various forms of visual narratology – photography, illustration, comics, animation, films, etc. – to understand how stories are structured, how we generate meaning from them and how they catch on and resonate with us.
