Veranstaltungsname:
The Contaminated Bodies under Techno-capitalism,
Double-edge Promises of "Development"

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
In this seminar we will reflect on the sociopolitical dimensions of the shift towards green technologies, reflecting on the impact the ongoing colonial power dynamics have on bodies predominantly in the Global South.

In the context of the ongoing climate crisis, we encounter more often the promise of technology as the ultimate solution to save us from complete catastrophe. We see a shift on energy production to renewable sources, green mobility, the EU passing laws to abolish the sale of combustion engine vehicles. We finally start to notice climate policy as one of the main points in the political agenda of many governments worldwide, one clear manifestation of its relevance is the current coalition in the German government.

However, we ran the risk of falling into the trap of green-washing and techno-fetichism, a shiny promise of a future where complete optimization of our technologies and modes of production would allow us to continue through the same tracks of exploitation and extractivist mindset. How can we radically rethink our relation to nature, to other non-human beings, and to the vast majority of the population of this planet who are very far away from enjoying the promise of this techno-capitalist future. We see Giga-factories sprawling all over the world, including Brandenburg, but do we truly consider the impact of the extraction of lithium, for water sources in the area between Chile-Argentina and Bolivia? Are we aware of the impact this has on the access for water for indigenous communities, or is this another manifestation of postcolonial power structures?

This seminar takes the format of an artistic research on the contradictions, but also the possibilities of technology in the scheme of our necessary societal changes.  We will read and discuss together different definitions of the term “development”, by questioning the modernist imperative of continual growth and capital accumulation. The reading list for the seminar include: “The Open Veins of Latin America” - Eduardo Galeano, “Pluriverse: a post-development dictionary” - Ashish Kothari et.al, “Zwischen Körpern / Among Bodies” - kleine Humboldt Galerie, The Promise of Total Automation - Anne Faucheret, David Jourdans (Eds.), Posthuman Ecologies - Rosi Braidotti, among others. Furthermore, we will focus extensively on reflecting on the historical impact that the extractivist mindset has had on water and resources of communities on a planetary scale. We will include into the reflection artistic examples (Denise Ferreira da Silva, Patricia Belli, Tabita Rezaire, Johanna Hedva, among others) and our own artistic practices. During the seminar we will engage in collective body exercises, including walks to different locations in the city/outskirts, as a method to experience the maladies that bodies undergo in our current society.
