EYES WIDE SHUT IN THE GARDEN

experimental reading and listening seminar

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung:
We will listen to the plants in our Academy Garden Warten/Garten, whose soil is drenched by its colonial past. Each of us will follow a plant in its seasonal process of growing.

Various conceptions of sound from Amerindian indigenous people and of introspection (from Chuang Tzu, William James, Gregory Bateson, Yuk Hui) will play a role while listening. Amerindian indigenous people have distinctive ways of understanding sound and thoughts. For the Wauja (Amazonas), human thoughts have sound which can be heard by spirits. This perspective encourages introspection and recognition of the active role that thoughts play in shaping the world. Comparably, in healing rituals in the Peruvian Amazon, specialists charge plants with power through a process called "icarar" or "soplar", in which they sing or whistle a melody while holding a plant close to their mouths. We will further problematize questions of appropriation of secret sacred knowledge.

Against this backdrop we discuss sound works of artists who play with plants, such as Astrid Gonzalez and Wingel Pérez. Meanwhile, Gonzalez addresses reflections on the historical processes of Afro-descendant communities in the Americas, such as colonialism, structural racism, and the processes of whitening as the paradigm of progress and miscegenation in the Americas. Pérez uses Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Supercollider, and sensors attached to plants to create interactive sound sculptures whose sound is deeply connected not only to the behavior of the plant but also to its interaction with the audience.

Excursions to the Kupferstichkabinett of the Kunsthalle Bremen and scientific walks in the adventive historical surroundings of Speicher XI are part of the program.
