Circuit Breakers
Resisting Bodypractices
Official Course Description:
„The key thing may be to create vacuoles of noncommunication, circuit breakers, so we can elude control.“ (Deleuze)
The seminar intends to explore several body practices and techniques relevant in artworks. These include pieces by artists such as Adrian Piper, Allan Kaprow, Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark who does not characterize their works as performances but as propositions. What is the relationship between body and subjectivation processes?
Along with the analysis of theoretical (for example Rancière, Butler) and historical approaches as well as their underlying body images, the focus will be placed on current artists. Several of them, however, do not comprehend themselves as the performers or authors of artworks but rather as the initiators of bodily processes (Löffler). It concerns collective practices that wish to trigger the dissolution of the figure of the artist.
