Official Course Description: ‘Alternative facts’, fake news, hate speech – how media influence our perception of the world and the challenge to distinguish the real from the fake and the artificial. A journey through media critic in the history of philosophy from Plato to our modern age What can be defined as ‘medium/media’? How do the dangers and possibilities of media look like? Is reality accessible to us? Does unmediated reality exist? Myriads of philosophers have tried to find answers to these questions – answers grounded in various theories and therefore often differing quite radically. The seminar wants to give an overview of the most prominent philosophers’ opinions by close and critical text reading and aims at a discussion of the topic in our modern world. The seminar programme containing a list with the exact text passages will be provided in the first session. Excerpts from works by Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Benjamin, McLuhan and Morton among others will be discussed.
