Official Course Description:
“The certainty that everything has already been written annuls us, or renders us phantasmal.” 1 (Borges, 1941)

As archiving, collecting, ordering, categorising has been the essential way to organise human thought, we are looking into these ideas and the possibilities of making a fixed structure such as an archive or collection more dynamic. What does it mean to make something dynamic and how to exercise this in creative practices will be the underlining theme. Relying on theories of Foucault, Cage and James P. Carse or fiction from Borges, we will discuss the existing ideas and alternatives.

What does it mean to create a structure or a frame that initiates change and why is this relevant? How does one play an infinite game as opposed to a finite one? In different fields we find different solutions. What could we learn from Cage’s chance operations? How is it possible to interpret Shakespeare's Hamlet 400 years later in different ways? How do feedback loops influence changes in systems?

Seeking further alternatives and reflecting on the creative process is the objective of the course. As “only that which can change can continue”, we are looking into ways of exposing one's continuous growth, the dynamic self that has yet to come. 2 (J.P.Carse, 1986)
We will engage into small practical exercises examining these ideas. If we consider everything in an archive a starting point or a quest for further thought, we will try to answer questions (create versions) and, at the same time, pose the next ones (the versions themselves).
